The Theme of the 2024 edition of World First Aid Day is ‘First Aid in Sports’. The event featured exercise displays and first aid demonstrations conducted by trained volunteers, showing how swift First Aid can make a difference in reducing the impact of accidents and injuries.
This year's theme, ‘First Aid in Sports’ notes the growing importance of integrating first aid into everyday life, especially in Sports. The Nigerian Red Cross used the occasion to emphasize the need for everyone, especially youth and families, to know basic first aid skills.
Speaking at the event, Secretary-General of the NRCS, Abubakar Kende stated, “With the growing awareness of the positive health effects of regular physical activity’; everyone wants to exercise. But do you know that life-threatening conditions can arise during Sports? First aid is an essential life skill that can make the difference between life and death in emergencies.”
The First Aid demonstrations drew attention to the physical fitness needed for effective emergency response. There were also sessions on critical techniques such as CPR (Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation). Volunteers also engaged the public in interactive sessions, teaching them how to apply these techniques in everyday situations, from household accidents to road emergencies.
