Mother's Club

The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) Mothers’ Club is a grassroots initiative that empowers women to safeguard the health and wellbeing of their families and communities. These clubs are at the frontline in the fight against Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM), equipping mothers with the knowledge and skills to prevent and reverse malnutrition.

NRCS Mothers’ Club

At the heart of the Mothers’ Club activities are practical, hands-on sessions. Mothers participate in healthy cooking demonstrations where they learn how to prepare balanced meals using locally available ingredients. These demonstrations emphasize affordable, nutritious options that can be sustained within households, ensuring children and nursing mothers receive the nourishment they need.

One of the key interventions taught in the clubs is the preparation of Tom Brown, a highly nutritious supplement made from roasted maize, groundnuts, and soybeans. This locally sourced blend has proven effective in reversing acute malnutrition in children and supporting nursing mothers with vital nutrients. By teaching mothers how to make Tom Brown, the clubs provide them with a powerful, low-cost tool to combat malnutrition right in their homes.

In addition, many Mothers’ Clubs have established community vegetable gardens. These gardens not only provide fresh, nutrient-rich produce for families but also serve as demonstration plots where mothers learn sustainable farming practices. The gardens help improve household diets, reduce food insecurity, and create a sense of shared responsibility within the community.

Beyond nutrition, the Mothers’ Club also promotes exclusive breastfeeding, hygiene practices, and early detection of malnutrition. Members act as advocates within their communities, spreading awareness and encouraging families to seek timely support.

Through these efforts, the NRCS Mothers’ Club is building healthier households, stronger communities, and a more resilient society. It demonstrates the transformative impact of women working together to protect children’s futures and fight malnutrition at the grassroots level.

Papa’s Clubs

Out of the desire of fathers in the community to also contribute to the health and wellbeing of their families, the Papa’s Clubs were born. What began as small groups of men supporting their households has now grown into a movement across multiple locations, with activities tailored to the specific needs of each community.

Several Papa’s Clubs have started poultry farms and local savings programs for their members, initiatives that strengthen economic sustainability for families and communities. These efforts not only provide income and food security but also foster solidarity among fathers.

Beyond economic activities, Papa’s Clubs have become champions of health in their homes and communities. Fathers actively promote breastfeeding, good hygiene practices, and the immunization of their children. Their involvement has helped shift cultural perceptions, showing that the responsibility for family health and nutrition is shared.

Together, the Mothers’ and Papa’s Clubs embody the NRCS commitment to community-driven solutions. By equipping both women and men with knowledge, skills, and resources, these initiatives are creating healthier families, stronger communities, and a brighter future for children across Nigeria.
